By distancing himself from others, he believed he could maintain some semblance of control over his inner turmoil  in  avoiding the  resurrection of the  pain of a lost love  that came  w hen  the interference of an outsider's  opinions or judgments  threatened his own judgment .. but it also left him feeling lonely and trapped in a cycle of his own discontent.
